About Ahlam Gharbaoui

Born in the Netherlands, Ahlam Gharbaoui’s life took an unexpected turn at the age of six when her parents made the courageous decision for her to embark on a unique and transformative journey. Leaving behind the familiarity of her homeland and her loving parents, Ahlam set out to study and live with her grandparents in Fes, Morocco. This separation brought forth a myriad of emotions as she yearned for the presence of her parents and the cherished memories she had left behind.

At the age of 8, Ahlam discovered a treasure trove of knowledge within her grandfather’s library in Fes.

It was there that she stumbled upon a transformative book titled “Self Criticism” by Allal El Fassi. This remarkable literary work fortified Ahlam’s belief in the importance of women’s rights, children’s rights, and the need to challenge societal gender roles. The book became a guiding force, fueling her passion for justice and equality. Despite the distance, she remained deeply connected to her parents and the Netherlands, eagerly anticipating summer holidays to reunite with them, relishing the familiar sights, the laughter of her multicultural friends, and the comforting green landscapes near her parents’ home…

What Readers Are Saying

Reader Reviews

I’ve read all the poems. There’s form and there’s content.

I walked miles in the forest without shoes.

That’s the line that sticks with me. A true poetic line, very brief, but you feel the branches piercing your soles. How vast is the forest, how much longer?
For me, poetry is about moving the other person with as few words as possible.
You achieve that now, sometimes with quite a few words; you sense the urgency, it had to come out! that’s a quality in itself, by the way.
But you know what happened to me while reading a heartbreak poem?
I heard it recited, rapped, by a singer. They are very beautiful song lyrics, above average. Then I started reading everything differently. It became much more than a poem, a kind of music for the soul, energy, boundless longing.
In the paintings, as someone not trained in visuals, I feel sensitivity, the woman on the front who poses seductively smelling a rose, but then elusive.

Very beautiful poems among them. I find them personal, spirited, and vulnerable. There’s a lot to read between the lines. It feels lived through. With current themes, a woman in a man’s world, longing for a better future, the strength of survival, conducting business in the Gulf region. Ahlam is a powerful poet and writer…

The texts are interesting, and her paintings are very beautiful. There’s interest in Casablanca for a book presentation!
